My friend’s grandma was in that church. She survived. Both he & his brother became original Black Panthers in Oakland. Sherwin & Reggie Forte. Understandably a pretty messed up guy. A true friend, though.
I’m glad your friend’s grandma survived. I taught in Watts and worked closely with the Panthers who checked to be sure students had food and did their homework. I really appreciated them. Oh, I wrote the poem when I was around 17 so that is more like 60 years ago.
