Dream: Last Day of August 2017

Today is the last day of August, 2017. If I look at the weather on my phone, it is hot and humid in Southern California. Below the numbers, there are short videos of rescues from hurricane Harvey, headlines promising stories of grisly finds, which I scroll past rapidly. Last night after dinner I had a small glass of wine which left me strongly buzzed, perhaps because all I ate was a rice cake with peanut butter and applesauce—too hot to cook and not hungry. On my computer email, different images, flooding and drownings in India, but Facebook screams of people and animals in Texas, harangues about how to send money without getting scammed. Passionate pleas for the Red Cross, equally passionate pleas that their bureaucracy doesn’t leave enough for victims. I didn’t read last night as I usually do, but awoke early, strongly troubled, feeling that my heart was beating too rapidly. My phone app said otherwise, pulse only 66, about the same as usual. Well, maybe it was irregular. I don’t have an app for that, yet. In the still dark morning, something is not right in my chest and dream images bob up like chunks of ice in a swift winter river.

The first dream image is sand and still water and a wood framed building which appears to be where I am now leaving employment. I don’t speak to the shade people around me as I gather the detritus of my former job and pile a few items on an old folding table. The only thing in the collection that appears to be important is a stack of paper, some pages dog-eared and wrinkled. I open an already packed cardboard box on the floor. In it is one of the old globe carafes that fit in the coffee machines in most old offices. Mixed with picture frames and pencils, unpadded, it is at an angle but not enough to spill its contents, about three fourths of a pot of dark brown coffee. I wonder if my car will be stuck in the sand. I turn and the papers on the table are gone. Perhaps thrown out by someone trying to help?

I hear the lines from Dylan’s song, “and admit that the waters around you have grown.” repeated over and over with the thought, Are you getting it yet? Huh? Huh? Are you getting it yet?

What am I not getting? Isn’t it obvious that the flooding in Texas is a warning? Too obvious. I assign meaning to everything. Hackneyed metaphors: The televangelist who doesn’t open the mega church until social media’s wails reach through the thick walls of his multimillion dollar home, the emphasis on rescues in Texas with only a casual glance at thousands dying in India.

My attention shifts to myself and I am indignant. We are talking massive casualties here and I am agonizing over my memoir? Needs an arc they say. Needs to be more chronological. Hell, I’m not chronological. My memory is spotty, random. But pressure is building. It needs to be in good hands before I go on the bucket list trip. Is it because the thought of a bucket list invariably leads in its logic to the conclusion of me?

Another image of the dream emerges. I remember going to a Catholic Church with my grandmother and watching her take communion. Bread is body. Wine is blood. Eat the bread, drink the wine, ensure the continuation. I see my hands tearing my manuscript into small squares and placing them on tongues. This document is my memory. This document is my soul. Eat and remember me. I was once young. I once had adventures. I once served death. My father, my mother, friends, husbands. Illness on illness. Death on death. I held sweet children and grandchildren. I felt ocean sand and pebbles in my sandals. I smelled fresh pine and earth in the woods.

The artist leaves paintings, the composer, songs. Each creates a space where they exist within their creations, to survive in time. But how many more paintings and songs are lost than remain? If there is rebirth, I do not retain memory of a former life to rest in. With no belief, my mind conjures a heaven of cotton candy, fluffy and too sweet. Thought repeats, No, this is it. This is all. This now. Consciousness will not know itself in base pairs on a chromosome or see an apple tree and remember that soft scent, nose pressed against fruit, that crunch, that slighty sour sweetness.

I will my arms around thousands of books, a samovar, an Inuit carving, Kachinas, talismans, amulets, remains of my life and my parents and their parents. Things to be scattered, divided, valued, not valued, saved with love, released with shame, ignored. I struggle on with my stories. I hold that dream image. I place a fragment of my life on an imagined moistened tongue. This is my body, this is my blood, this is who I was.

Jizo smiles beyond my plate,
watches me pause,
a cube of tofu
pressed against my lips,
then spear a sprig
of still crunchy broccoli that
grew in my garden
an hour before.

Through a glass of red wine,
I peer back at Jizo,
note the tear in his left eye
a bit of coconut oil?
Your tear is fading, I say,
It seemed to appear when my tiny grandson moved in.
Was that too much to bear,
protector of mothers and children?

Jizo smiles, silent, surrounded by shiny rocks,
that once garnished the desk
where I counseled future healers.
Now I focus cell phone on plate and statue,
snap a picture,
savor deep green spinach,
shameless red and white Chioggia beets,
orange carrots, a bit of brown rice.

When the bowl is clean,
Jizo smiles,
“Are you going to eat that square of dark chocolate?”

When I was a child, the butterfly of belief
Brushed a filmy wing across my forehead
“Chase me, chase me.”
Through churchyards and headstones
I reached out and grasped soft wings against my palm
I held,
Released her
Slept

In my youth, she hid behind napalm clouds of war
Fluttered above a guitar in songs of peace and equality
Was forgotten in the headiness of first love
Lit briefly in the comfort of second
Not knowing if I really held her
Pretended her presence
For my children

In middle age, children gone to chase their own butterflies,
No infinite sky, no fluttering form, a shadowed memory
In the dark cramped rooms of death
Parents, friends, my dying love
His mind and body, gone before the breath stopped
Mocking, mutant memories
No place for butterflies
Too fearful to sleep

My hand numb with grasping…

When Loneliness Knocks–Published in San Diego Poetry Annual 2016-2017

When loneliness knocks
Tashi doesn’t bark
but clicks across the wooden floor
until the warmth of her fur
brushes my hand
the hand that dangles, useless, below the desk

When loneliness knocks
my mind makes up stories:
what-ifs from childhood,
from words not said,
of kindness not returned
Sometimes what-ifs become
stories, poems, times
to dream what-might-have-beens
and try them on for size

When loneliness knocks
I pretend I do hot hear
I tell the empty chair across from me
“Must have been the wind.
Perhaps it will go away
if we make ourselves
very, very small”

Weakness, visions, roses
Shiraz—so long ago
A book
Rumi
Mosque, blue mosaics
Glimpse of the gate, the prophet
Places now gone, still in me
Though the sticky strands of the web
Pull to a different place
And no place

Sit with Jizo in a desert garden
Palo Verde Tree
Brass bowl chime
Pull me back to electron friends
From not, not being

You are the fragrant garden
Kumquat blossoms, rich lavender
Birdsong and spiraled butterflies
Nothing to grasp
I slip from beauty to traffic, buzz saws
Silver strands of spider web don’t pull me
Where are those that do?

God and Genies –Published in The Guilded Pen, An Anthology of the San Diego Writers/Editors Guild Fifth Edition 2016

Do you remember reading under a soft blanket as a young child when you hugged the hard book against your chest to quiet your beating heart? When you feared the genie would require your three wishes before you worked out your perfect scheme? Do you remember your smug sigh, your clever plan to ask for infinite wishes, the chance to undo those that didn’t work out? Did you wake up, stare at the dark ceiling, ponder if the rules allowed you to string wishes in a daisy chain of “ands?”

When you gave up on genies, do you remember holding a different book, praying to God, “if you exist, please grant this prayer and if you are all wise, will you understand why I don’t believe and grant it anyway?” Did you nag your nonexistent god for an unambiguous sign?

When life brought ends, beginnings, suffering, nothing, something, hope, despair, did you confuse genies and gods, add, “if you exist,” to every secret plea in your dark night? Did you try to believe? Pretend to believe? Envy those who did? Did you meditate, medicate, hallucinate, hesitate to equate the unexplainable with a deity who would let you return to His arms or Her womb? Did you escape to a monastery, take a Bodhisattva vow, hope you could bring infinite compassion to infinite beings, secretly worry you would crumble at the first test? Did you wonder what happens when gods or genies reveal themselves? Infinite happiness? Infinite pain? Rebirth? Pull the plug? Lights out?

Now when your crooked hands cling to the soft blanket, when you’ve seen the here, then not here of death, when friends and loves have gone on to what they expected or didn’t, do you still hug the hard book against your beating heart, ask for an unambiguous sign, pray for easy transition to something or nothingness and add,“if you exist?”

04-29-2017 Thoughts on Today’s Climate Change March

climate march 2017Crazy signs are the whitecaps, but the surge and energy of a body of people driven by a connection to the earth, a need to protect our hive, swells from the calm and powerful ocean. Young, energetic believers build currents. Old, steady, I’ve-been-there-and-this-is-important folks just walk, provide their drop to the ocean, their mortar to the edifice.

Walls and dams can temporarily hold back the sea, but eventually the dikes will crumble. The human collectiveness, the so often hidden bond with mother earth, presses forward, seeps through drop by drop by drop. The dam falls.

Even when water is separated from the main body, lies in shallow, putrid, ponds, loses its bulk and power to prevail, even then, evaporation cleanses it. Clouds become rain and join the ocean once more. That is the nature of water. It cannot help itself.

I sit alone in my empty house while children are bombed, whole populations starve, fossil fuels foul our rivers. My body in the climate march will probably not be noticed, but the bulk, the many, the ocean cannot be ignored.

Orange Dragon (11/26/2016)

An orange dragon scorched our land with orange loathing.
Orange fire beneath dark smoke
Orange hate, slime of ownership
Of what should be left in the ground
Dead bodies, black skin of beings
The waste, the remains
Black snake fed by greed, lust.

Sick, fatigued,
Craving the sacred water
I rose from the putrid sheets
Put guilt aside
Felt the warm clear stream wash my weariness

Too late, I spied a helpless spider,
Limp thread legs,
Swirl, down the drain by my feet
Slain by my cleansing wash

I wished it free from suffering, a fortunate rebirth,
Then asked the same for me

Robed and clean, I entered the garden
An orange monarch whirled with another
Then floated to an orange milkweed flower
A tiny lizard, peered up at me from an orange stone
Nodded, and filled me with orange happiness

Fresh from the co-op
In a pottery bowl shaped by an artistic friend
He’s now a dentist
His new art, crowns and dentures

Don’t crack shells with your teeth!

Gorging
I make a rule for myself:
I may savor the salty insides
‘til empty shells fill my palm
If a shell falls
I cease my feast

I pry open another nut
A single shell falls to the floor
But if I am careful
My palm could cradle more

Rule revision:

I retrieve the shell back to my palm
Pick apart another pistachio
And another
I will my hand to hold one more,
Coax open a reluctant nut

Shells splatter to the floor
My palm is empty
The bowl of pistachios isn’t

Rules be damned!

What to Do with Nine Twelfths–Accepted in San Diego Writers, Ink: A Year In Ink, Anthology, Volume 8, 2015

At the time it seemed a good idea
Dividing his ashes
One half—then another divided in sixths
For each child, his brother
And me, always trying to please everyone

But he’s probably not pleased
Lurking in plastic bags, in cardboard boxes,
In the garage

Oh, one part of him is in Yosemite
Another in the surf at La Jolla
A third is in his brother’s garden

But what to do with nine twelfths?
The house?
There are already too many ghosts
Dragging their vaporous selves out from between
computers, cell phones, printers
and vast quantities of unlabeled chargers

Not the vegetable garden for the confirmed hater of spinach and broccoli!
His kids said Disneyland, but now they rarely visit
Afraid I may say,
“Just a minute, I need to give you something from the garage.”
They are wise to me
Our family of indecision, denial

So there he sits
What will I do with the nine twelfths in the garage?
